Hot Summer Ahead? How to Run Your Air Conditioner on Solar

October 21, 2026 8 min read

The Bureau of Meteorology’s latest long-range outlook, issued on 8 October 2026, says November to January maximum temperatures are likely to be above average across Australia, with the highest chances of unusually hot days in eastern New South Wales. In Queensland, the Bureau has also flagged an increased chance of a severe cyclone and of heatwaves this season.

For many homes, that means more air conditioning, and it tends to run hardest in the late afternoon and evening, just as solar output fades and peak prices kick in. This guide shows you how to run your air conditioner on solar as much as possible: pre-cooling while the sun is up, the reverse cycle settings that matter, how a battery covers the evening, and what it takes to keep cooling running in a storm blackout.

The Short Answer: Can You Run Your Air Conditioner on Solar?

Rooftop solar can power your air conditioner directly whenever the panels produce more than the house is using. The trick is timing. Do most of your cooling while the sun is high, let the house hold that coolness, then use stored solar from a battery (or as little grid power as possible) for the evening.

That evening stretch is where the money is. On Ausgrid’s network in Sydney, peak network pricing runs from 3pm to 9pm every day from November to March. Energex in south-east Queensland also sets its time-of-use peak in the late afternoon and evening. Retail plans vary, so check your bill, but the pattern holds: the hottest evening hours are also the dearest.

If you are still deciding on panels, a well-sized home solar system is the starting point, because every strategy below depends on having daytime surplus to work with.

How to Pre-Cool and Set Up Your Air Conditioner

Pre-Cooling on Solar

Pre-cooling means running the air conditioner earlier than you strictly need to, while your panels are producing surplus power, so the house is already cool when the sun drops. The building holds that coolness, so the system works less during the expensive evening hours.

Rooftop solar above an outdoor air conditioner unit, set up to run the air conditioner on solar
  • Start in the early afternoon on hot days, while solar output is still strong.
  • Watch your export. Your inverter app shows when you are sending surplus to the grid. That surplus is capacity you can use for cooling.
  • Use a timer or app control so the system can start before you arrive. Renew, the not-for-profit sustainability group, notes that pre-cooling only pays off if the home holds its coolness, so insulation and shading matter as much as the air conditioner.
  • Close the house up. Shut windows, blinds and curtains during the hottest part of the day.

Reverse Cycle Settings That Matter

The Australian Government’s summer energy savings guide recommends setting your air conditioner between 25 and 27°C in summer, and says every degree higher can save between 5 and 10% on your energy costs.

  • Setpoint: pick a temperature in the 25 to 27°C range and leave it there.
  • Zoning: cool only the rooms you are using. The ACT Government’s reverse cycle buyers guide notes that homes with several split systems can be zoned effectively, while ducted systems often condition living areas constantly unless they have good zone control. With either type, close internal doors.
  • Timers: program the system to start during your solar window and to ease off once everyone is in bed.
  • Maintenance: clean the dust filters and keep the outdoor unit clear.

How Does a Battery Carry the 4pm to 9pm Stretch?

A home battery stores the solar you generate in the middle of the day so you can use it later. The Queensland Government’s battery buyers guide points out that the evening is when most households use more electricity, including for air conditioning.

To work out how much battery your evening cooling needs, you need your air conditioner’s electrical input, which is different from its cooling capacity. Renew explains that electrical draw is roughly the cooling rating divided by about three to five, so a 6 kW unit with a coefficient of performance of three draws up to about 2 kW at full output. Your unit’s specification sheet lists its rated power input.

Worked Example: One Evening of Cooling

These figures are assumptions for illustration. Replace them with your own unit’s rated input and your own habits.

AssumptionValueNotes
Air conditioner size6 kW coolingUp to about 2 kW input at full output
Average electrical draw1.5 kWAssumed, as units cycle below full output
Evening run time5 hours4pm to 9pm
Evening cooling energy7.5 kWh1.5 kW x 5 hours
Same evening at a setpoint 2°C higherAbout 6 to 6.8 kWhApplying the 5 to 10% per degree guide

On those assumptions, evening cooling alone would use most of one Sigenergy SigenStor module (8.76 kWh usable). A Hinen B14400 (13.68 kWh usable) would cover it with roughly 6 kWh left for the fridge, lights, cooking and TV. Real results depend on the weather, insulation, any backup reserve and other loads, so size a battery to your actual usage. Our solar battery options page explains how the main choices compare.

Will a Battery Keep the Air Con Running in a Storm Blackout?

Only if the system is designed for it. According to the Queensland Government, most grid-connected solar systems shut down automatically in an outage, whether or not a battery is attached. To keep anything running, the battery needs a backup-capable setup, such as a backup gateway or a dedicated backup circuit, so the home can disconnect from the grid and run on stored power.

Backup comes in two forms. Whole-home backup powers everything but drains the battery faster. Essential-load backup keeps selected circuits running, such as lights and the fridge, so the charge lasts longer. Whether the air conditioner is included has to be decided when the system is designed, because its circuit must be wired into the backup side and the system must be able to supply its load. As the worked example shows, a few hours of cooling can use a large share of a battery.

For the products we install, a Sigenergy SigenStor battery needs the Sigen Energy Gateway for whole-home backup, and a Hinen B14400 battery needs a separate backup gateway. We explain the full picture in what happens to your solar when the power goes out. With the Bureau warning Queensland of a heightened severe cyclone risk, according to ABC News reporting on 6 October 2026, it is worth confirming your setup now rather than during a storm.

Your Summer-Ready Checklist

  • Clean the air conditioner’s dust filters and clear the area around the outdoor unit.
  • Set the cooling setpoint between 25 and 27°C.
  • Program a timer or app schedule to pre-cool from early afternoon on hot days.
  • Check your inverter app to see how much solar you export around midday.
  • Find the peak window on your electricity bill so you know which hours to avoid.
  • Look up your air conditioner’s rated power input and redo the worked example with your numbers.
  • If you have a battery, confirm whether it has backup, which circuits are covered and what backup reserve it holds.
  • Check blinds and curtains on west-facing windows before the first heatwave.

What a Summer-Ready Solar and Battery System Looks Like

A summer-ready system is designed around your afternoons and evenings. That means enough panel capacity to run the air conditioner and charge a battery in the same afternoon, a battery sized to your real evening load, and a clear decision on backup before installation. A good starting point is to size your panels around summer cooling as well as your bills.

Timing also matters for cost. Under the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, the federal battery rebate is scheduled to step down on 1 January 2027. As an upper bound, one Hinen B14400 attracts up to about $3,700 now versus about $3,100 from 1 January, and one SigenStor module up to about $2,350 versus about $1,950 (as at October 2026, subject to eligibility; this is a federal government discount delivered through STCs, not an installer offer). Our guide to the battery rebate step-down explains the dates.

Clean Power Australia has completed more than 10,000 installs across NSW, QLD, ACT and SA since 2017, including 5,000 batteries, using local SAA accredited installers. Our consultants start with your bills, roof and cooling habits.

Common Questions

Can solar panels run an air conditioner without a battery?

Yes, during the day. When your panels produce more than the house is using, the air conditioner runs on that solar and any shortfall comes from the grid. Once output fades in the late afternoon, you need a battery or grid power to keep cooling.

What temperature should I set my air conditioner to in summer?

The Australian Government recommends 25 to 27°C. Each degree higher can save 5 to 10% on energy costs.

Will my battery run the air conditioner in a blackout?

Only if your system has backup capability, such as a backup gateway or backup circuit, and the air conditioner’s circuit is included in the backup design. Not every battery is installed with backup, and essential-load setups may leave air conditioning out to preserve charge.

How big a battery do I need for evening cooling?

Multiply your air conditioner’s average electrical draw by the hours you run it in the evening, then add your other evening loads. In our example, 1.5 kW for five hours is 7.5 kWh, but your figures will differ. A consultant can size it from your actual usage data.

I recently had cause to contact Clean Power regarding my solar installation and was referred to Renae Marskell. Renae was extremely helpful and clearly demonstrated a high level of subject-matter knowledge. Her professionalism and strong drive to secure a satisfactory outcome for me - as a customer - was very much appreciated. It reflects very well on Clean Power as a company. I don't know your staffing structure, however if at all possible, I would consider making her a team leader, as (even from my limited exposure to her) I am confident that she would inspire her team to a similar high standard of customer service
